Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964, is a prominent American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice presidency and the highest-ranking female politician in U.S history. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she served as the United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her career began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. She was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. From 2017 to 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris beat Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election, becoming the second African American woman to serve in the Congress, and the first South Asian American American to do so in the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare as well as federal de-scheduling cannabis, a path towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status and the DREAM Act, a ban of assault weapons and progressive tax reform. She is best known for her direct questions to Trump administration officials during Senate hearings.
